This is "Carlos" (name of the sculpt from the artist) however I like to call her Ophelia. She is a very rare OOAK clay baby. She is a full size newborn, a tad on the bigger side baby. I've only seen a few full size clay babies in my entire time collecting and researching. From my research when an artist hand sculpts a baby from clay they have 3 options, to either turn the baby into a vinyl mold, to turn the baby into a silicone mold or to bake and paint the baby as-is making it the only one like that in existence. Since turning a baby into vinyl or silicone breaks the original clay mold, it's uncommon to see a clay baby as they are not very profitable for the artist.
When I first started looking into clay babies it seemed like they were done a little more commonly in the beginning days of reborning and were often times portrait or honor babies. These babies would cost thousands of dollars. This makes sense, because an artist makes their funds back for their time and skill by selling quite a few kits, so only being able to sell one clay baby would need to be highly profitable.
It seems that the popularity of clay babies has gone out of fashion due to the profit margin of only one existing. And I don't know a single artist making them (that are not minis) these days. So Ophelia would be an amazing addition to anyone's collection, probably even a good investment as they will just get more and more rare.
Ophelia is such a special baby, her hair is beyond phenomenal. When an artist makes a clay baby they have to literally bake the hair into the scalp so it's a very difficult process. So her hair is beyond amazingly rooted considering the methods used. Her hands are highly detailed and look so real, since there is no molding process the artists are able to get more micro details into the sculpt.
Ophelia does have a tiny tiny booboo on her right ear. Just the very edge of the ear looks rougher, maybe like a minor chip? Aside from that she is in brand new, absolutely phenomenal condition. And that is so rare for a clay baby. Clay babies feel so special and different in your arms. You feel like you are holding a irreplaceable piece of art and you know nobody will have a similar baby ever.
Please reach out if you have any questions. I am always happy and willing to entertain any offers especially ppff offers, and might even be open to trades.
